IT Tower: bottom-up installation work
You might say that Bart de Dycker, who works for a company called Simillon, recently moved to higher ground. Literally—since he began renovation work on the prestigious IT Tower with the lighting for the parking lot, before working his way up the 23-storey building one floor at a time. And because the project seemed to have as many contractors as the tower has floors, the challenge was considerable.
|
Sonepar: By Belgian standards, the tower qualifies as a skyscraper. How does one go about tackling a project of this kind? Bart De Dycker: Our work began in 2001 on the ground floor. The building owner was delighted with what we achieved and asked us to continue moving up, so to speak. In fact, we worked in distinct phases. For example, we fitted two very elegant meeting rooms on the ground floor, where we also took care of the lobby, the parking garage and the elevator alcoves. The last phase involved the installation of lighting and wiring for the communications network in office tenant premises.
Sonepar: A phased approach doesn’t necessarily simplify things, does it? Bart De Dycker: That’s right. Initially, the principal and client was the owner of the building. But it turned out that a number of building tenants also called on us, since it was easier for them—we were there and we knew the building inside out and from top to bottom. And as is often the case, we then have to deal with a broad range of differing tastes.
Sonepar: Did this degree of diversity also make itself felt in terms of lighting equipment orders? Bart De Dycker: Most of the functional lighting is made up of Technolux products, which Cebeo had custom-made. This was an aspect of Cebeo that was fairly new to me.
Sonepar: When we arrived, you seemed to be in the middle placing an order… Bart De Dycker: Yes, one of our people just called to say he needed something else. And since lobby visitors have easy access to the Internet, I was able to quickly log on to Cebeo’s e-shop and do a little browsing. It’s a great way to place orders or make offers. As you can imagine, we don’t have a lot of time for that during office hours. With onsite delivery, we can save a whole day.
