New distribution centre Inauguration

Jacques Labbé and Pierre Bibeau Sonepar Canada

January 26, 2005, was the official opening date of the Lumen new distribution centre, which has been in operation since May 25, 2004.

In only seven months, the Lumen team accomplished a major feat in logistics reengineering: it centralized its distribution operations without affecting its productivity or its customer service. Quite a challenge for this team of the Sonepar Group. Jacques Labbé, vice-president (logistics), and Pierre Bibeau, operations manager are the designers of the new Pointe-Claire distribution centre. This centre is at the cutting edge of technology: 23,000 square meters and 22,000 products on hand.

The challenge
Move the former distribution centre (7,000 meters feet) from Pointe-Claire, move the wire and cables division and the head office from Saint-Eustache; and move the Lumen branch from Saint-Laurent-all to a single location, in seven months! Within the Sonepar Group, there has never been such a rapid transition, functional from day one.

Logistics
Pierre Bibeau says, "We have a lot of experience on what works and what doesn't work. Within the Sonepar Group, this is not the first centralization to be co-ordinated. We based ourselves on examples of centres in Germany and France. Our international expertise allowed us to avoid errors that could have prevented us of being functional on day one. Everything was thought out, and fortunately the plan worked. Maybe for the next centralization they will turn to Quebec for logistics expertise!

This centre is good for about twenty years. The employees were brought to the site before the opening to run simulations. The whole team was thus able to familiarize themselves with their new work environment. On day one, everyone was ready. Most of our customers didn't even notice the transition." says Jacques Labbé.

Service
For counter sales, the response time remained unaffected; within six minutes, you leave with your order. Easy to access, counter sales can serve several clients at the same time. «All our products are rapidly accessible, even those in the Band C classes (less requested)". For an industrial or residential contractor, the possibility of finding all the materials in a single place becomes highly attractive. And outside delivery takes 24 hours or less, anywhere in Quebec! "At Lumen, we have a night service. We have provided our customers with secure containers that allow us to drop off materials during the night. In the morning, the materials ordered the day before are already on-site. Contractors appreciate this service. They don't have to carry a stock of goods. We provide them with anything on the market from our centralized site and we deliver in 24 hours or less, even at night!" The level of satisfaction is 99.99% since the centralization thanks to a rotating team of 85 employees works 24 hours per day. Lumen is certified ISO 9001-2000.

A great success!
