In 1956, via a Helsinki employment office for youngsters, the 15-year old Henry Tiihonen became an office messenger. The following year he was promoted and his messaging duties expanded from the office to the outside world. Three years later, when Henry had reached the age of 18, he started work at radio maintenance and the radio & TV factory. Then having completed national service he went back to radio maintenance as an outdoor installer. Installation jobs took him all over the country as audio systems were installed to theatres and sports fields. "Car radio installations were also started up by touring Finland, and at the same time I promoted Becker car radios, which SLO represented", Henry says.
"The biggest change in my working career was moving over to the radio & TV factory. The job entailed radio and television assembly. The next milestone was founding of the Becker car radio installation workshop and independent work as its head between 1966-1980. The third most significant change came when SLO discontinued to represent Becker and the workshop was closed down. I then transferred to work at the warehouse."
"It is the audio system and car radio installations that have stayed in my mind as the most cherished memory from my best working years."
After fifty years in work Henry Tiihonen retires a happy man. "I have had a good and diverse working life here. I could have gone on, but respecting my wife's wishes I won't. We shall spend retirement together alternating between our home here and our summerhouse on the South coast. The summerhouse provides a neverending source of interesting little jobs."
