The new CDC of in Garbsen near Hanover is operating!
After one year of construction the building was handed over in May but the official inauguration took place this autumn. The warehouse equipment such as shelves, conveyor technology and industrial trucks, was completed just-in-time – as usual in logistics. The new CDC for the Northern and Eastern part of Germany features 85,000 stock locations for small items, 25,000 locations for euro pallets and more than 2.8 kilometres of conveyor technique.
The first assembly with goods of around 100 suppliers had been already done when the move-over to the new warehouse took place in July 2007. 27,000 articles moved to the new CDC in just one weekend. 215 people worked in six shifts and picked the goods in the old warehouse, loaded them, shipped them and finally took them in again in the new CDC. All in all 170 trailers brought the articles to the new CDC in Garbsen. From Monday on the Sonepar branches and all customers of the Northern and Eastern part of Germany received their articles from the new CDC. It was a success from the beginning because customers didn’t notice the change over to the new CDC.
Ceremonial act in October
In October the official inauguration took place with elected representative and economic life actors. Frank H. Lakerveld, President of the German Board of Management, started the CDC by pushing a symbolic start button. Afterwards the attendees took the opportunity to have a closer look into the CDC following guided tours.
The same day in the afternoon, customers and employees came to see the new “heart of distribution” of the Sonepar Deutschland/Region Nord-Ost. Around 1,500 people found their way to Garbsen and were impressed by the size and the capability of the new CDC.
