Brook Electrical took part in the renovation of a famous subway station of Chicago

Sonepar USA

The new subway station at Dearborn between Jackson and Van Buren links Chicago’s rich architectural and plans for the future. At the Southwest corner of Dearborn and Jackson is the seventeen-story Monadnock Building, a historic Chicago Landmark skyscraper, which is one of the tallest brick load-bearing wall structures in the world.

Along this historic streetscape is the new entrance to the Subway for the Blue Line. The entrance signage, designed and manufactured by Lumenelle Inc., integrates the latest energy efficient environmentally friendly lighting technology with security camera which is architecturally sensitive to its’ surroundings.  The transfer of technology takes place on this block again over 100 years later as the face of the sign is edge light using Sylvania LED’s (light emitting diode’s).  The previous versions used a more difficult to maintain neon light source.
Understanding these principles that the central business district is the economic engine of the city, in June 2000 Mayor Richard M. Daley initiated the Chicago Central Area Plan.  This was the result of a steering Committee of business and civic leaders to develop a visionary plan for the future which addresses the challenges of growth and prosperity for the coming years.

The improvements at the Dearborn/Jackson Subway have been made thank to the efforts of a collaborative team which was led by Tom Ambry of CDOT.  The new streetscape subway entrance signs were developed in particular by a collaboration of Brook Electrical Distribution Company. The historic streetscape was preserved and enhanced by the architecturally consistent design of the subway entrance and signage.  The new design has improved the quality of the pedestrian space.

The new design follows the vision of “green” Chicago by being a smart energy manager.  The manufacturer of the signs used the latest lighting technology of energy efficient environmentally friendly products from Sylvania.  The face of the sign was lit with white LEDs while the stairs were lit using high lumen fluorescents.  The selection the lighting components of the sign were recommendations from Andy Lynch of Brook Electrical Distribution Company.

This new subway entrance signage, designed by Peter Janko of Lumenelle Inc., The Chicago Department of Transportation, and Andy Lynch of Brook Electrical Distribution Company, in collaboration with the design and installing teams, is a symbol to the people of Chicago and the world that Chicago respects and embraces its past and has plans for the future to showcase this world class city.
