Some suppliers have been deceived by impostors posing as Sonepar Group associates.

What is false customer fraud?

Customer fraud consists of diverting goods by posing as a customer or prospect whose identity has been stolen.

What is the modus operandi?

Impostors contact suppliers using an email address similar to Sonepar’s, and request a quote for products.

In order to establish a relationship of trust, several emails are usually exchanged.

The impostor is quick to attach an extract from the trade and companies register of Sonepar or Sonepar France, to present their favorable financial situation, and requests that the goods be paid for only after delivery.

The false delivery address given is usually in the same city as a Sonepar site.

Believing that they are doing business with Sonepar, the suppliers deliver the goods before they realize that they are being scammed.

How to detect customer fraud?

In order to protect oneself and the company against these types of fraud, it is necessary to verify the reality of a customer's existence and physical address. This is always the first step in prevention.

The identity of the customer or prospect should be checked as thoroughly as possible (website, email address, delivery address, telephone, etc.), as well as the provideddocuments (extract from the trade and companies register, VAT declaration, bank details, identity card, etc.).

If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to make a counter-call to the client company or contact us.
